LUCKNOW, OCTOBER 11: The Uttar Pradesh police have added another bloody statistic to their crime roster: a woman nine months pregnant was reportedly beaten up by policemen in Thakurganj in Lucknow on October 3. Mohisina lost her baby because of the beating and has suffered severe injuries.

Mohisina’s “crime” was that she objected when policemen barged into her house in Faridipur village, Thakurganj, looking for her brother, Rafiq, who was involved in a dispute. When Mohisina told them that there were no men in the house and they should come later, they allegedly dragged her outside and beat her up.

“A policeman kicked me in the stomach,” alleged Mohisina. Though her brother couldn’t be traced, the police continued to beat her, she said. The local police post in-charge, Javed, has been suspended and the police station in-charge of Thakurganj, M.P.Pal, has been “sent to the lines”.

Just a couple of days ago, the police had arrested Ajita Pandey on charges of stealing. Ajita was allegedly beaten up in custody, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has now instituted a probe into the case. However, the state government has not taken any action against the policemen involved in the Ajita Pandey incident. “I cannot comment on every report published in newspapers,” said V.K. Mittal, Principal Secretary (Home).

According to NHRC, 159 custodial deaths have been reported in UP so far this year. And 26,829 cases of police harassment were clocked in the first six months.
