CHENNAI, November 2: The Bharatiya Janata Party cannot talk of value-based politics or democracy anymore considering the “shameful” way in which it formed a Government in Uttar Pradesh, said GK Moopanar, president of the Tamil Maanila Congress here yesterday.

In an informal chat with newspersons, he said: “Earlier the BJP claimed they were head and shoulders above others in politics. Whatever they have done in Uttar Pradesh now is shameful. They have encouraged defection. They cannot talk about value-based politics anymore.” Moopanar felt that the BJP would be unable to stop some of its allies from misusing authority as `’the BJP has lost its clout”.

However, he ruled out a similar pattern occurring at the Centre, stating that the stability of the United Front (UF) Government would not be affected by the developments in Uttar Pradesh.

Pointing out that people from other political parties had been admitted into the Uttar Pradesh Ministry, Moopanar said the developments in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat showed that political parties wanted to avoid elections. “This appears to be the present trend,” he said. Pointing out that the UP ministry now has 93 Ministers and is scheduled to have over 100 Ministers soon, Moopanar remarked, “This is the biggest Ministry in any State so far.”

He reiterated the view that the Congress should join the UF Government at the Centre as this would lend stability to the Union Government. But he added that all the constituents of the UF should first agree to let Congress share power at the Centre.
