The unprecedented support extended by UP Congress legislators to CM Mulayam Singh Yadav in passing a resolution demanding inclusion of Hardwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts in the state has surprised the Congress government in Uttaranchal.

The resolution was passed by the state Assembly yesterday with the support of Congress and Opposition BSP.

After Uttaranchal was carved out of UP in November 2000, there has been agitations in both the districts to exclude them from Uttaranchal.

The SP had been leading these agitations and even fought the first Assembly elections in February 2002 on the plank of exclusion of these two districts but was completely wiped out. The party could not win a single Assembly segment from these two districts.

In the last Lok Sabha polls, the SP cashed in on the popular sentiment once again and won the Hardwar LS seat.

The support extended by BSP to the resolution is understandable since the party enjoys support in these two districts having six legislators.

Uttaranchal Congress chief Harish Rawat was at a loss to explain his party’s UP unit’s stand. He said he would take up the matter with the high command. The issue has given the BJP a moral boost since the party opposed the resolution in UP Assembly. The party has launched an attack on the ‘‘double talk’’ of Congress.
