Unsure, Cong doesn’t ‘oppose in principle’

The Congress today said it is ‘‘not opposed in principle’’ to Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani’s proposal for synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

However, the party has not been able to put a finger on exactly which part of the proposal they are supporting because the Congress is clearly opposed to the idea of fixed terms of state government and the Centre saying it is ‘‘undemocratic’’.

The party spokesperson had opposed the proposal the day Advani made it. Today, Satyavrat Chaturvedi said: ‘‘In principle, we are not opposed to Advani’s proposal. But we are yet to receive a concrete proposal from the Government and whenever we get it we are going to study the provisions and then take a decision.’’

‘‘The BJP is feeling political insecurity. It knows that in the Assembly elections in November, the BJP is going to lose badly,’’ he said. ‘‘The party is scared of the dire consequences in the Lok Sabha elections after losing badly in the Assembly elections in the four or five states,’’ he said, adding that the Congress is ready to face general elections anytime.

However, betraying the confusion in the party, Chaturvedi said: ‘‘For instance, what would happen if the Assembly of a state is dissolved before time. Will there be any control on the government? And in such a situation, will there be different elections at different times again?…It is clear that the proposal has been floated without discussion and consultation with constitutional and legal experts,’’ he added.
