MUMBAI, OCTOBER 3: If the Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP) is to be believed, the Father of the Nation is indebted to us instead of the other way around. Readers of Marathi newspapers woke up to a rude shock on Saturday, when advertisements in major Marathi dailies by the DAVP on the occasion of Gandhiji's 130th birth anniversary, reminded the nation about the Mahatma in these words - `Hazaro varshe yevot, hazaro varsho javot, parantu tumchyavarche aamche roon kayam rahil,' which when translated into English means: `Years may go by, but you will forever remain indebted to us.' However, the correct version of the advertisement was carried in other languages.A major Marathi daily today carried a clarification saying the mistake was not theirs but the central government agency's. ``Angry readers have been calling us up asking for an apology. We want to clarify that we are not concerned with the contents or translation of advertisements that we carry and the responsibility in this caserests with the DAVP,'' it said.Meanwhile, the DAVP has apologised saying that only the Marathi version was wrong. The rest of the advertisements in the English and other language papers were correct and stated that `The nation would forever remain indebted to the Mahatma.' Action would be taken against the person who had translated the copy, the DAVP said.Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Pramod Mahajan has said, ``The original advertisement was in English and the mistake must have occurred while translating it into Marathi. There is no mischief here. We will definitely take action against the person who translated the copy.''
