The British High Commission may have contested the BJP claim that the idol under the care of the British Museum is not that of goddess Saraswati but that of a Jain idol Ambika.

But Minister of Culture and Tourism Jagmohan, not quite convinced about the true identity of the goddess at the disputed Bhojshala/Kamal Maula mosque in Madhya Pradesh, has requested Minister of External Affairs Yashwant Sinha to pursue the matter once more.

‘‘I have written to the Minister of External Affairs and requested him to look into the idol case again,’’ Jagmohan said today. Two months ago the British High Commission had blamed an article written in the ’20s in an Indian journal for having created the confusion over the identity of the idol in its possession.

It had clarified that the idol of the goddess accompanied by a child was a Jain goddess. Jagmohan had disputed that view and his letter has only revived the debate.
