SAS NAGAR, Oct 19: More than 100 vehicles have piled up at the maal-khanas of the two police stations here but in absence of any clear-cut disposal policy, their fate is uncertain.

Rusting away in the thanas are vehicles which have either been impounded, are case property, stolen or unclaimed. It seems that even the insurance companies don’t want to take them.

Police officers categorically deny that policemen take out the vehicles for their personal use; rather, they complain that the vehicles take up space and, as they are at risk of damage or pilferage, they have to be guarded. The cops want some system of regular and prompt disposal.

S.A.S. Nagar Superintendent of Police B.S. Randhawa told Newsline that the last auction was held two years ago: "It is a lengthy process and must wait until the case is closed… Many times, insurance companies or others involved do not pursue cases so the delay is greater."

He added, "Vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Act can be handed over after paying the requisite fine to the authority concerned," he said. Around 21 vehicles are in the unclaimed category; three standing under police Act, one under the untraced category and eight under trial cases category.
