Even as Assam continues to reel under a devastating flood situation, the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) carried out a series of strikes across the state yesterday, injuring at least seven persons, and causing extensive damage to a trunk gas pipeline in Dibrugarh district. The group also caused extensive damage to a crude oil pipeline near New Jalpaiguri in North Bengal.
While the first explosion occurred at the Machkhowa market in the heart of Guwahati yesterday, the ULFA lobbed a powerful grenade at a group of people just outside the Bongaigaon Civil Hospital in lower Assam, leaving seven persons injured.
In the third incident, militants blew up a telephone exchange at Chabua in Dibrugarh district last night which was followed by another explosion on a trunk gas pipeline that led to a massive fire at Tingrai near Duliajan in the same district.
Official sources said the ULFA had become desperate and was trying to prove its existence at a time when the army personnel were busy rescuing the flood-affected. The ULFA has been trying to regroup after the setback it suffered in Bhutan in December and a number of survivors had trickled in to the Upper Assam districts, intelligence reports said. Over 400 ULFA cadres have also shifted to Myanmar and set up bases there.
