A part-time British soldier faces a court martial on Monday in connection with fake pictures published in the Daily Mirror appeared to show UK troops abusing Iraqi prisoners.

The photos made worldwide headlines in May when they were published just days after similar images appeared in the United States showing US soldiers abusing prisoners at Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib jail.

The soldier, identified as Private Stuart Mackenzie, is from the Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers Territorial Army, a unit attached to the Lancashire Regiment.

Piers Morgan, the Editor of the Daily Mirror at the time the pictures were published, was sacked in May after a government investigation found they were faked. One picture appeared to show a British soldier urinating on an Iraqi victim as he crouched on the floor. Mackenzie will hear the charges before entering a plea. — Reuters
