London, Sept 6: British sprinter Linford Christie has been cleared of doping charges by UK athletics disciplinary committee, the ruling body said today. The 39-year-old, the 100 metres Olympic champion in 1992, attended a hearing on Friday after he tested positive for nandrolone in February.
IAAF secretary general Istvan Gyulai said the world body would examine the findings of the UK panel over the next fortnight before deciding whether to accept the ruling. However, Gyulai hinted the IAAF would not be impressed by the UK bod’s argument that Christie should be cleared because it was not certain how the nandrolone found its way into his body.
“The IAAF rules say if it is in your organs or your body it doesn’t matter where it came from,” Gyulai told Sky News. “The next step is UK athletics send us the documents and reasoning why this decision was reached,” he added.
Gyulai said if the case was referred to the arbitration panel a hearing would likely take place in November.
Christie was heard by thesame committee that in July cleared European 200m champion Dougie Walker, who also tested positive for nandrolone.
The panel’s decision to clear Walker was not accepted last month by the IAAF, which ordered the case to be looked at by an arbitration commission. The Christie case now looks set to follow the same route.
