Impressed by the ‘‘statesmanship’’ shown by PM A.B. Vajpayee in launching a third peace initiative with Pakistan, British High Commissioner to India Rob Young said today he hoped New Delhi would not give in to terrorists trying to sabotage the new momentum.

‘‘In launching this initiative, (Vajpayee) has created a momentum. We hope this momentum can be sustained and not subject to attempts by terrorists to sabotage it,’’ Young said in an interview with The Indian Express here today.

Government sources agreed that both London and Washington were in ‘‘close touch’’ with New Delhi not to lose hope in the face of a possible bloodbath in Kashmir and elsewhere in the country.

Young said the international community continued to be in ‘‘close touch’’ with both sides and would continue to work with Pakistan to ‘‘ensure a full implementation of commitments given last year to end cross-border terrorism.’’ He was referring to the promises made by General Musharraf to both US Deputy Secretary of State R. Armitage and British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw that he would not only ‘‘permanently’’ end cross-border infiltration but also dismantle the infrastructure of terrorist training camps across the border.
