LONDON, Nov 24: A London court today ordered initiation of extradition proceedings against Bollywood music director Saifi Nadeem Akhtar, the prime accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, and set December 1 as the date for start of regular hearing.

Bow Street magistrate Ronald Bartle, issued the order after the crown prosecution informed him that the full case sheet papers had been submitted to Nadeem’s lawyers. The magistrate rejected a defence plea to exempt Nadeem from personal appearance on December 1 and thereafter during regular hearings.

Nadeem’s lawyers had sought a week’s extension of the hearing saying the prosecution papers relating to the case had reached them only this morning. Earlier, the crown prosecution informed the prosecution that they had dispatched the case sheet running into 250 pages, to Nadeem.

The papers were sent after British Home secretary Jack Straw gave his clearance to the crown prosecution to go ahead with the extradition case saying it was “substantive”.

Crown sources said, the relatives of the late Kumar had agreed not to press ahead with their plans to become a party.
