Britain charged eight terror suspects on Tuesday with conspiracy to commit murder and said one had plans that could be used in striking US buildings that were the focus of security scares this month.
The charges were the first official confirmation that the suspects were linked to the alerts in New York, New Jersey and Washington.
One of them, Dhiren Barot, 32, was also accused of having ‘‘reconnaissance plans’’ of the Prudential building, the NY Stock Exchange, Citigroup headquarters and the IMF.
The plans were ‘‘of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism’’, police said. He also had two notebooks containing ‘‘information on explosives, poisons, chemicals and related matters’’, while another man had ‘‘an extract of the terrorism handbook’’. The others are Omar Rehman, 20, Zia Ul Haq, 25, Abdul Aziz Jalil, 31, Nadeem Tarmohamed, 26, Mohd Bhatti, 24, Quaisir Shaffi, 25 and Junade Feroze, 28.
