UAE authorities today deported to India another Mumbai underworld gangster, indicating increasing cooperation between the two countries in cracking down on organised crime.

Anil Parab, a sharp-shooter and a close confidante of Dawood Ibrahim, was brought to Mumbai tonight by CBI officials after he had been handed over by Dubai’s authorities. Parab, who bears the aliases of ‘Robin’ and ‘Vangia’ (or brinjal, alluding to his stocky built) is named in more than eight cases of murder and many extortion cases as well.

The gangster was allegedly involved in the conspiracy to kill Kimbahadur Thapa, Sena corporator from Bhandup. Thapa was gunned down in the 90s. Parab is the sixth gangster to be deported from UAE. The others were Majnu Mustafa, Ejaz Pathan, Imran Rehman Khan, Iqbal Kaskar and Mohammed Altaf.

Pathan and Mustafa were involved in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case, while Khan and Altaf are booked under POTA in connection with the Ghatkopar blast last December. Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of Dawood, is facing charges of extortion and land grabbing.

Acording to sources, Parab had made ‘‘his bones’’ quite modestly. Starting as an armed robber in the early 1980s, he later joined the Ashok Joshi gang. It was his daring gunning down of Kanjur businessman Nanji Shah in 1985 that announced his arrival on the big stage. Shah was killed inside the premises of a court in Andheri.

However, Parab soon broke away from Joshi’s gang and joined the Chotta Rajan group. He soon became a part of Dawood’s inner coterie. It wasn’t yet over between Parab and his mentor Joshi, whom he killed in 1988.

According to underworld grapevine, relations between Parab and his new mentor Dawood became estranged during 1988-89, a period when the former joined the don in Dubai.

Mumbai Police sources said the reason could be because Parab suspected that the ‘Bhai’ was having an illicit relationship with his wife Neha, who had joined him in Dubai.

As a result, Parab, allegedly, plotted the killing of Neha, whose body was found in the Bandra-Kurla complex.
