Two prisoners booked for writing extortion letter to city pathologist

Two criminals lodged in the Saharanpur Jail have been booked for threatening a city-based pathologist and demanding money from him. Ravi Raj Khanna, a resident of Sector 15, received an extortion letter demanding Rs 5 lakh on October 17.

He immediately met Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava who immediately marked an inquiry.

The criminals were identified as Rinku Swami, a resident of Saharnpur and Ravi Tomar of Muzaffarnagar. Both were serving a sentence in Saharanpur jail, one for murder and the other under the Gangsters Act.

A police party was dispatched to Saharanpur to locate the accused. The police found that the two criminals, were serving a sentence.

Sources said the police party met the criminals who admitted that they had asked for money. They added the criminals had written the letter in jail. “They handed over the letter to a friend when they had gone to Saharanpur in relation to a hearing, who then posted the letter,” the source added.

The inquiry has been handed over to the Crime Branch. Officials say they will seek the production warrant from the local court for the custody of the two. A team will then be dispatched to bring them to the city for further investigations.
