GUWAHATI, Dec 4: Two Assam legislators, both belonging to the ruling Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), are currently on the wanted list of the state police following charges that both had allegedly beaten up an executive engineer and a PSO in two separate incidents recently.

While MLA Ali Akbar Miyan, who represents Bilasipara (East) segment, had allegedly beaten up Chandra Kanta Das, an executive engineer of the state agriculture department, the other MLA, Anowar Hussain Laskar, had allegedly roughed up his own PSO, Nazimuddin, after accusing him of robbing him of Rs 1 lakh in cash.

The police, having received an FIR from Das, the executive engineer, is stated to be looking for Ali Akbar Miyan, while it has also registered a case against Laskar, the other MLA.

The two incidents occurring almost simultaneously has embarrassed the ruling AGP, with party general secretary Nagen Sarma stating that the central committee had already sent for a detailed report from the respective district committees of the AGP in this regard.

Reports said Ali Akbar Miyan, the Bilasipara (East) MLA, had assaulted the executive engineer when his untenable demand for distribution of pumpsets available under the Assam Rural Infrastructure And Social Project (ARIASP), a World Bank-sponsored scheme, to his “own men” were rejected by the officer.

Laskar’s case is more interesting: he had gone on a private visit to Mizoram when he lost his money. The police traced down one Rosy Lallimpui of Kolasib (in Mizoram) who confessed to the theft.

But Laskar insists that it was his PSO who had stolen the money. The PSO has filed an FIR against the legislator. Laskar is the MLA from Dhallai constituency.

The police had last year arrested Laskar for allegedly assaulting an official of the District Rural Development Agency, too.
