Tension prevailed in Godhra town late tonight after two men were killed and more than 13 injured in a blast in the Polan Bazaar area.

The two victims who died have been identified as Hussain Anwar Pathan (21) and Jamil Ahmed Pathan (30) while 10 of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition and have been shifted to the SSG Hospital in Vadodara.

According to police sources, the blast took place near Gunj Shoda Masjid between 9.30-9.45 pm after two men on a motorcycle left an unidentified object at a cold drink kiosk, one of the many here where Muslims gather after namaaz during Ramzan.

Vadodara District Collector Dinesh Brahmbhatt said,‘‘The blast took place at a spot where Muslims had gathered for Iftar. But the exact reason behind the blast not yet known.’’

He said forensic experts were taking samples and investigations were on.

Meanwhile, people gathered in large numbers outside the SSG Hospital in Vadodara on hearing about the incident forcing the authorities to deploy security forces to control the situation.

Panchmahal District Superintendent of Police (in-charge) B H Bhatt refused to comment on the number of casualties and said that the number can be revealed only after the investigation is over.

Meanwhile, local leaders have announced a bandh on Saturday in the town following the incident.
