Navjot Singh Sidhu, strongly feels that Indian selectors should choose ‘horses for courses’ when they sit to select the Indian squad for World Cup in South Africa, next year."Conditions in South Africa will be quite different. The national selectors should hinge around the guys who played in the Champions Trophy and Natwest Trophy in England. Our team is doing a fine job under the astute leadership of Saurav Ganguly right now," Sidhu told The Indian Express here today. The former Indian opener felt happy that the so-called ‘young brigade’ has taken the pressure off the senior players like Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid. However, for Sidhu, bowling is still Indian team’s weakest link. "Little squirt will not become a fountain. We have to rely on specialist bowlers. Srinath is our most experienced bowler and has performed reasonably well in the recent times. We don’t have any bench strength and are not like the Aussies who can afford to drop Bret Lee and take Bichel in place of him," Sidhu opines. He also believes that there is no point in taking two wicket-keepers for the World Cup, especially in the absence of quality all-rounders."We have paper all-rounders in our team. And moreover, do we have the guts to drop Dravid, who is doing a great job, and take Parthiv Patil in his place? It’s another thing if selectors want to send an extra wicket-keeper for South Africa darshan. If ifs and buts were pots and pans, there would be no tinkers!"A man of worldly wisdom, Sidhu selects just two spinners in his team for the World Cup. "Taking Murali Kartik is a mouth-watering thought but remember pitches in South Africa do not aid spinners. Harbhajan and Kumble can do the job well."And finally, when the topic of discussion shifts to Sachin’s batting position, Sidhu is all cock-a-hoop for it. "It should be flexible. But remember, you don’t want your trumpet to sound like a whistle. If Sachin comes down the order then the bowlers will dictate terms to him. One can never put a toothpaste back into the tube," Sidhu beats a retreat in his impeccable style.
