MUMBAI, August 25: Two persons were injured when they were fired upon by two assailants at Jogeshwari (west) this afternoon. The shootout is believed to be a fallout of inter-gang rivalry.

The incident took place at 12.35 pm near Boston Hotel, SV Road, Jogeshwari, when Nasir and Salim Lala were travelling in an autorickshaw. The assailants, who were driving a Yamaha motorcycle, followed the vehicle for some distance and then opened fire, injuring the two.

While the rickshaw driver Mohan Sakaram Shedge’s left shoulder was injured, the same bullet grazed Nasir’s abdomen. Salim escaped unhurt, said the police. The rider and the shooter disappeared from the scene of crime and rode towards Andheri, said eyewitnesses. ACP (north west region) Dr Satyapal Singh, under whose jurisdiction Jogeshwari falls, said one round was fired from a 9 mm pistol. Chhota Shakeel gang members are suspected to be behind the firing. Though it is yet to be confirmed, Nasir is allegedly a member of the Shakeel gang, and may have defected from the faction. He added that one of the assailants, a Muslim, has also been identified. There are few Muslim shooters in rival gangs who fit the description of the assailants. Said Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Ranjit Singh Sharma, investigations have revealed that Nasir was allegedly trying to mislead the police by giving wrong information about the incident. “It appears that the assailants were known to Nasir, as he is trying to conceal facts,” claimed Sharma.
