The daughter of a farmer committed suicide after her debt-ridden father stopped the education of her brother to save money for her marriage in Buldana district of Vidarbha region, police said today. The incident came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a Rs 3,750-crore bailout package for the region’s farmers.
On the same day, two farmers hit by crop failure and sagging under debts committed suicide in Akola and Amravati districts of the same region in Maharashtra.
Rakhi, the eldest daughter of farmer Shivruora Shelgenwar of Shelgaon Deshmukh village in Buldana district jumped into a well after he stopped her brother’s education for her marriage, police said.
A 22-year old farmer, Kishore, of Umra village in Akola, jumped before a running train. His father has been bed-ridden due to paralysis for the past six years, family sources said, adding that crop failure for the past two years and loan burden forced him to end his life.
Shrikant Rangrao Kalbande (23), a farmer of Nimbhora Lahe village near Badnera in Amravati district, committed suicide by consuming poison in his field, police added. The village is famous for its oranges, however, the crop had been hit due to lack of water for the past few years. This forced Kalbande to take the extreme step, family sources said, adding that his brother was handicapped and his parents were aged.
