Five persons, including two children, one of them about 18 months old, were killed on the spot and 10 others were injured in a blast at Machkhowa in Guwahati early Saturday morning. Three of the injured are

in critical condition.

The blast occurred near a roadside tea stall on the Tarun Ram Phukan Road at Machkhowa, adjoining Fancy Bazaar under Bharalumukh police station. Police said the blast was caused by an IED. Police suspects hands of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) behind the blasts.

Those killed included tea stall owner Rafique Ali (45), his 8-year-old son Sadiq Ali, Sanjib Ali (25), Hasem Ali (17) and an 18-month-old girl Anifa. Assam Police chief R N Mathur, who was at the blast site in less than 30 minutes of its occurance, however, refused to name any outfit responsible for the incident. “We will be able to say after proper investigation,” he said. The ULFA on its part has neither confirmed nor denied its hand behind the explosion.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi regarding the bomb blasts and flood situation in the state. He conveyed condolences and condemned the attack. He expressed sympathy for the flood affected people and assured of Central help.
