Police said Vishal is a childhood friend of the victim, whose family has been residing in his neighbourhood for a long time. The relationship between them had been strained in recent times as Vishal did not approve of the girl being friendly with a youth.

The girl stated in her FIR that she was walking down the Indo-Bremen Maitri Chowk in Aundh when Vishal approached her around 11.30 am on Saturday.

The FIR said the girl accompanied Vishal to a hotel on the Pune-Sinhagad Road after he insisted on discussing some important matters. Vishal who appeared in a foul mood started consuming liquor immediately after reaching the hotel. Inspector Apune said the girl tried in vain to convince Vishal that there was nothing wrong if she behaved in a friendly manner with their neighbours. Enraged over the girl’s refusal to stop mixing up with the neighbours, he said, Vishal broke a liquor bottle and wrote his name on her forearm with a piece of glass.
