CHANDIGARH, July 19: To improve the overall standing in the National School Games, the UT Education Department has identified certain events in which they stand a chance to win a medal. The education department in coordination with the sports department will also open sports wings for outstanding players in various schools.

The education department has identified 20 schools including ten in the girls section where sports wings seats will be allotted in the current academic session. According to one of the officials of the education department, the selection of the schools were done on the basis of their performance in the last edition of the Chandigarh Inter-Schools meets. Those schools who have excelled in a particular discipline and also have facilities for that game, have been allotted the same event so that the players can perform upto their potential in the forthcoming national meets, the officials said.

Most of the disciplines which have been identified are team events.The players in the wings apart from refreshment will also get coaching and kit.

In the boys group, basketball and handball have been allotted to SD School, Sector-32 and Government Model School-19, respectively. Kabaddi is allotted to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector-35 while hockey wing will be opened at Government Model School-33.

Football and volleyball have been alloted to Government Model School 22-A and Government Model School-32, respectively.

Kho-kho (Government Model School-37), cricket (Government Model School-23), badminton (Government Model School-10), table tennis (New Public School-18) and lawn tennis (Government Model School-16), are other events which have been identified in which Chandigarh stands a chance in the National School Games.

In the girls category, hockey has been allotted to Government Girls School-18. Government Model School-16 and Government Girls School-8 have been allotted basketball and handball wings.

The schools which have been allotted other games are Government Model School-33 (kho-kho), Government School, Dhanas (kabaddi), Government Model School-26 (volleyball), Government Model School-35 (table tennis), Government Model School-23 (badminton), Carmel Convent-9 (lawn tennis) and Dev Samaj School-21 (cricket).

Varun Kumar Gupta of Chandigarh has been nominated by Chandigarh Roller Skating Association for participation in the National coaching camp which is being held at Vishakhapatnam from July 20 to August 7. During the camp, Indian team will be selected to take part in the eighth Asian roller skating championship slated to be held in October in China.
