CHENNAI, Apr 26: TVS-Suzuki Limited (TSL) has recorded a sales of Rs 1313.18 crore for the 12-month period ended March 1999, up 28.9 per cent from the previous year sales of Rs 1018.62 crore. Profit after tax stood at Rs 81.39 crore, 18.36 per cent more than the previous year’s Rs 68.76 crore. Interest remained at Rs 19.88 crore (PY Rs 19.91 crore), depreciation was marginally higher at Rs 28.84 crore (PY Rs 23.90 crore). The profit before tax was Rs 105.40 crore (PY Rs 101.24 crore). However provision for taxation was lower at Rs 24.01 crore (PY Rs 32.48 crore).

According to the TVS-Suzuki president C P Raman, the market share of the company in the two-wheeler segment was 21 per cent, a significant rise of over 18.9 per cent market share achieved in the previous year. The volume in the two-wheeler industry grew by 22 per cent.

A four stroke 150 cc motorcycle from TVS-Suzuki will hit the road in the 3rd quarter of 1999-2000. An all new Shaolin with improved engine and new styling is to be launched in the first quarter of 1999-2000.

A new 15 bhp Shogun with disc brakes and mag alloy wheels will be launched in the second quarter of 1999-2000. In mopeds a 70 cc Champ will be introduced in the 3rd quarter of 1999-2000. An electric start version of Spectra is also to be introduced shortly. The TVS-Spectra is a 4 stroke 150 cc geared scooter launched in October 1998.

TVS Scooty sales continued to grow with 96,234 vehicles sold for 1998-99 (PY 72,019). In the scooter industry, TSL commands 7.5 per cent, 2 per cent more than the previous year. In the motorcycle segment volumes grew by 27 per cent to 2,68,101 vehicles from 2,11,685 vehicles. The company sold 3,33,890 mopeds, 14 per cent higher than the previous year commanding a market share of 52 per cent.

The XL-Super which was launched in December 1997 had good growth during the year with total sales touching 109,568 units.
