CHANDIGARH, April 19: A truck driver accused of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment and fined Rs 700 by UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Jasbir Singh.
Rohtas Singh was booked under Sections 304-A and 279 of the IPC after the truck he was driving rammed into a motorcycle, killing the rider, Kishori Lal. The case was registered on the complaint of an eyewitness, Uttam Chand.
The public prosecutor, P.K. Kundra, had contended that the accused was overtaking a vehicle when the accident occurred near the Sector 31 petrol pump on March 7, 1994.
He added that the fleeing driver was apprehended after Harjeet Singh, driving a jeep, chased and intercepted the truck near the New Labour Chowk. During the trial, the prosecution’s case was supported by Uttam Singh and Harjeet Singh, besides other witnesses.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, contended that the accused was being falsely implicated in the case.
