A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the state should take the initiative in the formation of Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday said she had already written to Singh for carving out Bundelkhand, Purvanchal and western UP as separate states. She also threw the ball into the UPA Government’s court by saying that “according to the Constitution, it is the Centre which should take the initiative for the formation of the new state”.
The Chief Minister was addressing workers at the party’s new office here on the birth anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram.
When asked about the Mayawati Government favouring creation of smaller states to be carved out of Uttar Pradesh, the Prime Minister on Friday had said the Centre would consider if a proposal to this effect came from the state Government. On Saturday, Mayawati said her Government had already clarified its stand that not only Purvanchal but Bundelkhand and western UP should also be made separate states. “Under Article 3 of the Constitution, only Parliament could create new states,” she added.
Criticising the UPA Government for not considering Kanshi Ram for the Bharat Ratna, Mayawati highlighted the work and ideology of the Dalit icon. Since it was his last wish to see his party rule at the Centre, she exhorted the party workers to fulfil it.
Mayawati also released a book A travelogue of my struggle-ridden life and Bahujan movement on the occasion.
