The announcements made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) “are suggestions” and it is for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd’s (BSNL) board to decide on implementation of a hike in fixed line tariff, according to Union Minister of state for communications and IT Sumitra Mahajan. This means the new tariffs are not binding on private telecom companies and they have the option of not implementing the TRAI rates. “The Government has no important role to play and it is for the BSNL board members to sit together and think about it,” Mahajan said while inaugurating a seminar.
