LUDHIANA, June 12: Taking strong exception to the “intimidating and humiliating” attitude of officials who raided several eateries, sweet shops and ice cream parlours to take samples under the Pure Food Act in the city on Thursday, the Punjab Beopar Mandal, Halwai Sudhar Panchayat and Punjab Halwai Association have decided to observe a Black Day throughout the state on June 16.
At a press conference today presidents of the state and district unions complained that a team of officials had treated sweet shop owners, confectioners and bakers as “hardcore criminals and terrorists.”
Elaborating, Charanjit Singh, who owns a leading sweet shop said that the accompanying police personnel who were armed took positions outside his shop and barred the entry of customers during the time, Health officials took samples. Similarly, Rajinder Singh, owner of a fast food joint at Fountain Chowk alleged that his employees were threatened while the telephone was snatched from the hands of an employee when he tried to call the owners.
Sunil Mehra and Mohinderpal Aggarwal of the Beopar Mandal warned officials to desist from such provocative actions and added that they would take up the matter with the chief minister and other senior functionaries of the government and the ruling parties.
They said that traders would be forced to further intensify the stir and give a call for “dharnas,” demonstrations and even a Punjab “bandh” if the government did not intervene immediately and put a stop to the harassment and humiliation being meted out to traders.
