MUMBAI, JAN 22: Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Company, makers of multi-purpose vehicle Qualis, has hiked its sales target to 35,000 units in 2001 as compared to 21,000 Qualis sold last year. The company has ruled out launch of any new models till the new auto policy is unveiled out by the Union government.

Addressing a news conference here today, Toyota Kirloskar Motor General Manager Sandeep Singh said the Japanese major has already notched up 35 per cent market share in India while Telco and Mahindra & Mahindra has seen its sales and market shares remaining stagnant.

“Qualis has received good response from both urban and semi-urban areas and the company plans to increase its penetration this calender year by adding more dealers,” he added.

Qualis, priced at around Rs 5.4 lakh in Mumbai, is growing despite a slowdown in the industry at 2,452 units in December as compared to 1,820 units sold in November.

“We have decided to hike our target to 35,000 which is almost half of total MPV sales in India,” Singh said. The contribution of total MPV sales to entire automobile industry sales will also increase from 5% in calender 2000 to 8-9% in the current year, he said.

Toyota has now launched a limited edition of Qualis, priced at Rs 8 lakhs. The company will produce 1,000 units of Qualis targetted at high salaried class.

On new models, Toyota said it is looking at various models but it will take a final decision only after the new auto policy is announced. “It will take us at least 18 to 24 months to launch a new model after the policy is clear by February 28th this year,” Singh added.
