“They would again kidnap and rape me”. It was this level of paranoia that prompted Suman, the 28-year-old resident of village Pasena Khurd, Panipat, to attempt suicide outside the Haryana Police headquarters, Sector 6, Panchkula, on Saturday.
“My brother Nitesh Kumar was booked on charges of kidnapping a minor, but despite the local court acquitting him in the case, the family members of the minor girl wanted to take revenge,” said Suman after being discharged from the General Hospital, Sector 6.
She added, “It was on May 31 that my father Chain Singh was brutally murdered by a group of 11 persons of the girl’s family in front of my eyes. But the police declared it as a case of suicide.”
She alleged that being the only eyewitness in the murder of her father, three men of the same group kidnapped her on April 8 and then gangraped her.
Suman added that while an FIR was lodged in the gangrape case against Roshan, Brijpal and Balbir Singh of the area, no significant action was taken in the case till date.
“I visited the DGP office three times and every time I was assured that I would be given justice, but then nothing happened. The threats from the other party continued and it was then on September 21 that they picked up my brother and murdered him on September 23,” added Suman.
For Suman, the worst came on the night of September 26 when she was again followed by some men from the same gang.
“I had gone to the market to buy vegetables around 8 pm, when I saw two men of the same gang stalking me. They wanted me to withdraw the case of my father’s murder,” said Suman.
She recalled, “Without any second thought, I boarded the bus to Panchkula. I reached here late in the night and stayed with my relatives. As I was fed up of the entire system, I went to Zirakpur in the morning and consumed some unknown medicines at one of the chemist shops.”
After consuming the medicines, Suman reached the DGP office in Sector 6, Panchkula, where the officials asked her to come on Monday.
“I had no place to go. They told me to sit at the park outside the office till Monday if I had no other place to go. It was then that my condition deteriorated and I was rushed to the hospital,” said Suman.
The IG, Ambala range KK Sindhu visited the hospital on Monday and assured Suman that stern action will be taken against all the accused in the case.
Suman was later discharged from the hospital after which she left for her village with her husband Kaka.
Talking on the developments in the gangrape case, the spokesperson of police headquarters, meanwhile, said, “As there were insufficient evidences to prove that she was raped, the case was dismissed. Also, the DNA report for the same did not confirm rape.”
