A top scientist today expressed his reservations about Centre's policy on special economic zones saying the loss of fertile land to industries will severely impact agriculture."If India loses all its fertile regions for residences and industrial units, where will food come from," President of the 95th Indian Science Congress, R Ramamurthi said."Importing food is possible if India continues to have adequate foreign exchange; however, it must be kept in mind importing food also means importing unemployment and losing political sovereignty," he said."Can one section alone move ahead with materialistic gains leaving behind a vast majority poor, unskilled and a large number of illiterate rural communities," he said.The science congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the day.
