KARIMNAGAR, APRIL 7: Azam Ghori, allegedly a prominent member of the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and an agent of Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan, was shot dead by the police at Jagtial in the district on Thursday night.

Ghori, who was eluding the state police, was involved in several cases of murder and bomb explosions in cinema theatres.

According to district superintendent of police Nalin Prabhat, on specific information that Ghori was moving around in Jagtial, a special team was deployed to trace him. The police party spotted him on a cycle near the petrol station and intercepted him.

On seeing the police, Ghori tried to whip out a pistol, forcing the police to open fire. He died on the spot, the SP added.

Police recovered a fully-loaded 9 mm pistol with star marks on either side. Two hundred grams of explosive material, believed to be RDX, was also recovered from him, the district police chief added.

Ghori was also involved in the recent murder of Devender, an RSS activist in the state capital. Police probing the case recently arrested Asgar Ali, an associate of Ghori. The setting off of a crude bomb in a city theatre on the eve of Republic Day and in some other cinema halls in the state besides neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra were his handiwork, the SP added.

Nalin Prabhat claimed that special teams were constituted after movements of ISI agents were tracked down in Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts. A party comprising special intelligence bureau sleuths, anti-extremist team personnel and the Nizamabad police was keeping a close watch in Jagtial which resulted in the gunning down of Azam Ghori, the SP added.
