MUMBAI, Jan 9: Continuing their blitzkrig against the underworld, the Mumbai police gunned down the third-in-command of the Arun Gawli gang Sharad Bandve Saturday night at Borivali. This is the tenth encounter death in the first nine days of this year.Following a tip-off that a top gangster from Gawli gang was likely to visit a lonely spot on Borivali link road near Don Bosco high school between 9-10 pm, Assistant Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar and sub-inspector S Mayekar from Nagpada police station laid a trap at the spot. Around 9.15 pm the police team spotted a man moving suspiciously on the road. The man was identified as Sharad Bandve. Bandve was asked to surrender, however he whipped out a revolver and opened fire on the police, who retaliated seriously injuring him.He was rushed to Bhagwati hospital but was declared dead before admission.Police have recovered a .45 bore revolver from him. Bandve was among the `top ten' most wanted criminals of Mumbai police. In the Gawli gang hierarchy afterBandya Adivalekar, he was the most important member of the gang. According to police records, Bandve was involved in the killings of builder Manish Shah and industrialist Vallabh Thakkar and several cases of extortion.
