AMRITSAR, FEB 6: The row between Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee chief G S Tohra has flared up again, this time over the entry of plainclothed Punjab Police personnel into the SGPC complex at the Golden Temple.

Police entered the complex last midnight and conducted an overnight surveillance operation as part of stepped-up security due to the SGPC executive committee meeting on February 10 in the temple complex. However, Tohra and Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh strongly criticised the Government’s move calling it “unfortunate and provocative” although an SGPC spokesman admitted that “no search of any portion was conducted.”P C Dogra, DGP, Punjab Police, met senior police officials here this morning and claimed that the police had entered the SGPC complex to inspect the area where the Feb 10 meeting would be held. He denied any search and said that security personnel had been deployed to prevent entry of any “anti-social elements” intothe complex.

An SGPC spokesman condemned the police action and said this was the first time after the Beant Singh Government that the police had entered the SGPC complex. He said it was the SGPC’S duty to maintain law and order within the complex.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Narinderjit Singh said the district authorities had held a meeting with SGPC officials at Circuit House last evening to discuss security arrnagements. He said no prohibitory orders had been imposed around the SGPC complex.

The DGP said the “police would cater to the peace and well-being of the state.” And at no cost would the police enter the Golden Temple complex. “How can we commit such a blunder?” he said.

The meeting has became crucial following reports that the SGPC has decided to ignore the directives of the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission. The SGPC hasn’t issued any agenda yet. It’s expected that 10 SGPC executive members, loyal to Badal, will hold a meeting on schedule in the SGPC complex and this could leadto a confrontation.

Denying that police had entered the temple to carry out any search operations, Badal said he had contacted district officials who had clarified that rumours were being spread to create a misunderstanding.

“The Akali Dal Government would not commit such a blunder,” he said. He added that strict instructions had been issued to the police though law and order would have to be maintained.
