.

To maintain the neutrality attached to the post he holds, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee requested his party not to consider his name for the Central Committee, which was reconstituted at the party’s 18th congress that ended on Monday.

Chatterjee’s decision is likely to have been prompted by the controversy that the BJP had kicked up over his visit to the CC meeting immediately after he took charge as Speaker. Following that incident, Chatterjee stopped attending the Central Committee meetings. ‘‘Our party respects his decision that he not only wants to appear neutral but also remain neutral as long as he holds the Speaker’s post,’’ sources in the CPI(M) said.
