The DMK government in Tamil Nadu will introduce necessary legislation to provide reservation for Muslims and Christians in educational institutions and employment opportunities. It would also bring in a legislation to provide mandatory reservation for scheduled castes, tribes and other backward classes in unaided, non-minority self-financing educational institutions. Making his customary address, which outlined the new government’s policies, Governor S S Barnala said this would be in pursuance of the 93rd Constitution Amendment. The Assembly would also pass a resolution in the current session backing the UPA government’s move to introduce 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher education institutions like IITs and IIMs. The Opposition AIADMK members boycotted the Governor’s speech by walking out of the House before he began his address after shouting slogans against the DMK regime. They accused the government of not keeping its poll promises and complained that security for AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had been scaled down. They also alleged that MDMK general secretary Vaiko was facing ‘‘death threats.’’-jaya.menon@expressindia.com
