Amid growing tension in the state following the first sentence to an Uttarakhand agitationist, the Uttaranchal Assembly today passed a unanimous resolution, requesting the Centre to withdraw all cases filed by the CBI against those who took part in the agitation for statehood in 1994.
A bandh was observed in Dehra Dun today, with educational institutions and commercial centres remaining closed. The bandh was called by the ruling Congress in protest against the jail sentence to Umesh Chand Gusai.
Meanwhile, officials said the state government has ordered a high-level probe into the alleged self-immolation bid by a former student leader, Ghambhir Kathait, in Tehri.
Revenue Secretary N.S. Napalchayal would conduct the inquiry and submit the report to the state government in a month’s time, officials added.
