With the setting up of the eastern India’s first tissue bank at North 24 Parganas soon, a heart valve transplant will cost nearly seven times less than its current cost of Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000.
The only other city where work on tissue conservation is being done is Mumbai, and after the bank comes up here, it will be possible to have a skin transplant for a few thousand rupees in Kolkata. The entire project will cost around 1 crore.
“We hope the tissue bank will help the poor and they will be able to afford costly transplants and skin grafting,” said Brojo Roy, secretary of Ganadarpan, which has been associated with organ donation. Ganadarpan is also associated with the tissue bank project.
“The bank will be a lifesaver for people who have suffered major burns and whose skin needs a replacement. The machine that will be used to store the tissues will cost nearly Rs 50 lakh,” Roy said.
Around 100 bodies are donated in West Bengal every year. Apart from unclaimed bodies, which are used by medical students, various organs of those who have donated their bodies, will be surgically removed and stored in the bank at North 24 Parganas’ New Barackpore area.
