CHENNAI, Jan 30: The judgement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has thrown up mixed and predictable reactions with the BJP urging a halt to exploitation of the issue for political gains and the Congressmen harping on to keep the issue alive at least till the nation goes to polls. In his reaction, BJP vice-president Jana Krishnamurthy has stated that the exploitation of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination for political gains must stop, now that a quietus has been given for it.
In a statement on Friday, he said that all the 26 accused have been sentenced to death, and the evidence before the court must have justified the verdict. It is also stated that few persons involved in the murder are yet to be apprehended for obvious reasons and necessary steps have to be taken to see that the Court’s order is duly and properly executed.
However, the Congress had brought down the UF government based on the Jain report, knowing fully well that the judgment was due. The party was known for its political vendettautilising murders for its own political gains.
The recent statement of Sonia Gandhi was a proof of this, as she had linked the BJP with Mahatma Gandhi’s murder. “One can understand her utter ignorance of Indian history and politics but that cannot be an excuse for irresponsible statements, he said.
However, TNCC president K V Thangabalu stated that the DMK, which had extended `moral support’ to the LTTE, should accept total responsibility for Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.
In a statement, Thangabalu said the designated court, which delivered its judgement in the assassination case, while clearly indicting the LTTE, had proved that it was during the DMK government that the militant group had conceived the plot to murder Rajiv Gandhi.
He alleged that Karunandihi, who was in power in the state from 1989 to 1991, must have known about the LTTE’s plot to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.Echoing his feelings, Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress (TRC) president, Vazhapadi K Ramamurthy on Thursday demanded that Prime MinisterI K Gujral immediately drop all the DMK ministers from his cabinet in the wake of the judgement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
In a statement from Salem, he said the death sentence on all the 26 accused on Wednesday by the designated TADA court proved that they had `plotted and conspired’ to kill Rajiv Gandhi with the active help of the then DMK government in 1989 and 1991.
So, the four DMK Union ministers should be dropped from the Cabinet, Ramamurthy implored the Prime Minister.
Charging the United Front as well as the DMK governments with failures, he said the state government had failed in its duty to control the deteriorating law and order situation and prevent the series of bomb blasts which occurred in the state, killing several persons.
