With Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan facing disqualification from Rajya Sabha for holding an office of profit, the Mulayam Singh government  today pushed through a Bill in the UP Assembly that seeks to take away 79 posts, including chairmanship of the UP Film Development Council headed by Bachchan, from the list of offices of profit.

The Assembly passed the State Legislature (Prevention of Disqualification Amendment) Bill, 2006, by a voice vote amidst stiff opposition from BJP and BSP whose resolution for referring the measure to a select committee was negated. Congress members stayed away during the Bill’s passage.

Meanwhile, Jaya Bachchan has sent another letter to President Kalam, objecting to the EC recommendation for her disqualification. She has cited several court rulings to defend her case.
