NEW DELHI, February 8: The first-ever sports meet between State players and Tihar jail inmates will start on Tuesday.

The three-day Tihar Jail Sports, organised as part of the golden jubilee celebration of India’s Independence by jail authorities, will pit the inmates against formidable opponents from Delhi’s kho-kho, kabaddi and cricket teams, Deputy Inspector General (Prison) Jaidev Sarangi said today.

The kho-kho match will be played in the complex of jail number five on February 10, followed by kabaddi and cricket matches in jail number four and five respectively during the next two days, he said.

“This is for the first time in the world that teams comprising prison inmates will challenge the supremacy of `professional teams from outside,’ he said, adding, it was a part of the ongoing prison reforms.

Sarangi said noted journalist Prabhu Chawla would be the chief guest for kho-kho match with Lalit K Bhanot, Secretary Delhi Olympics Association, while All India Radio Director General, O P Kajriwaliwould preside over the kabaddi event with Kuldeep Vats, President of Amateur Kabaddi Association of India as special invitee, he said.

Editor of the Hindustan Times, V N Narayanan will grace the occasion of the cricket match event along with Amrit Mathur, Secretary Sports Authority of India.
