The Tiger Task Force, which is in Karnataka, is using remote sensing to map tiger areas.

During its meeting at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) today, the members debated if the collection of data should be done by the forest department or be handed over to wildlife biologists and researchers.

At the meeting, Task Force chairperson Sunita Narayan wanted to know if ‘Carto-Sat’ could be used to map the forest areas in the country, with special focus on national parks. When some members replied in negative, it was suggested that services of other satellites could be availed of to map forest areas. Such maps would give a precision of four metres.
