CHANDIGARH, Aug 18: The Chandigarh Administration will make major investment in government schools in colonies and villages for upgrading the infrastructure, Adviser to UT Administrator Jagdish Sagar has said.

During his visit to Sector 7 today, Sagar said that more schools would be built in villages and colonies during the next two to three years.

He added that wherever required, minor investments would be made in City schools to resolve the problems and money would also be spent on their regular upkeep. The priority area, however, would be the village and colony schools, 30 of which have been identified.

Sagar said that if the residents of any area wanted the buses of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) to ply on a particular route, it would be considered. He stressed that shortage of buses was not a problem, provided the occupancy rate was at least 50 per cent. At a session organised in the Sector 7 Government High School, the staff told the Adviser that students had to sit in verandahs and open areas for want of classrooms. At this, the Adviser instructed the Engineering Department to construct some rooms in the school.

While touring the area, the residents told Sagar that a particular stretch of road in the Sector faced waterlogging. At this, Municipal Corporation officials informed that there was no system for storm-water drainage in Sector 7 and estimates were being prepared in this regard.

The lack of a road behind the Sector 7-C market was also highlighted. The Adviser said the office of the Chief Architect would study the Master Plan and if a road was provided, it would be constructed.

During the Adviser’s visit, S.N. Sawhney and other representatives of the Sector 7 Residents’ Welfare Society submitted a memorandum of demands. They highlighted that due to sub-letting in various houses and an increase in the number of unauthorised occupants, the number of thefts in the Sector had gone up. Residents demanded police verification of the antecedents of the persons living in the area.
