Angry residents of a Lucknow locality lynched a 40-year-old man after they found the body of a three-year-old girl with her throat slit in his house on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Birhana area, under the Wazirganj Police Circle. The girl’s family members alleged that accused Shiv Mohan Sharma (40) alias Shibhu had raped her before slitting her throat, though the post-mortem report did not confirm the same.

Police said Shiv Mohan was arrested a couple of years ago on charges of raping a nine-year-old girl. The case is still pending in court. According to the police, the girl’s father, Ratnesh, approached them after he found his daughter missing on Tuesday morning.

Ratnesh received an anonymous call on his cellphone. The caller said the girl was with him. A few minutes later, Ratnesh received another call from the same number. This time, the caller told him “not to worry”, as he would “return the child in the evening”.

Ratnesh said he called back at the number and found that the calls were made from a PCO in the same area.

“At the PCO, I was told that it was Shiv Mohan who had made the calls,” he said. “When we approached Shiv Mohan, he denied making any calls to me. Later, however, he accepted that my daughter was at his house,” Ratnesh added.

Lalita Sharma, the girl’s grandmother, said they went to Shiv Mohan’s house and found the child’s clothes in the bathroom. “When we searched the house, we found her body wrapped in a cloth in one of the boxes,” she added.
