Sporting colourful bandannas, swaying to the traditional lezim and hands joined in fervent plea to return soon, thousands of devotees bid adieu to Lord Ganesh on Monday, the concluding day of the 10-day festival here.
In Mumbai, chants of ‘‘Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhachyavarshi lavkar ya’’ (Praise to Lord Ganesh, come soon next year) reverberated as devotees lined the streets, carrying Ganesh idols to 71 immersion points.
Elaborate security measures were drawn up by police to ensure the smooth immersion of over 8,000 idols of Sarvajanik Mandal and 1.39 lakh statues belonging to various households. Over 30,000 police personnel were deployed across Mumbai to monitor the crowds.
In Pune, huge processions proceeded towards the Mutha and Mula rivers for the immersion. There were 2,642 mandals in the city
In Ahmedabad, hundreds of devotees accompanied over 600 Sarvajanik Ganesh idols of different sizes during the immersion procession, while in Surat, over 10,000 idols were immersed. The state Irrigation Dept released excess water from Ukai Dam to ensure immersion of the idols. More than 6,000 police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
