Imagine watching a T-Rex charging at you on a screen that is 4,500 times bigger than television, with 12,000 watts of sound and so close and crystal clear that you feel the animal’s next step will crush you. All about 3D technology AHMEDABAD: The 3D technology imitates the way we see real images. When we look at an object, there are multiple images and our brain fuses these together into a single 3D image. The two lenses on IMAX 3D camera roughly match the distance between our eyes and and the object. So, each lens ‘‘sees’’ a slightly different view. The images are photographed onto two separate rolls — one corresponding to the right eye image and another to the left eye image — which run simultaneously through the camera. Specially-designed Italian glasses help viewers watch the three dimensional movies. (ENS) You can now feel that thrill with the country’s first three-dimensional (3D) IMAX theatre being thrown open to the public. The theatre was inaugurated this evening by Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani. Being one of the finest motion picture systems in the world, IMAX incorporates a film frame 10 times bigger than the conventional 35 mm film. The theatre covers various subjects like science, geography, history, design and technology, computing studies, business studies, visual arts and media studies besides English language and personal development. The theatre, spread over 2.14 hectare, has 651 seats for 2D film viewers and 557 seats for 3D film viewers. Designer sticks to things natural AHMEDABAD: Noted architect Balkrishna V. Doshi, who has designed the 3D IMAX theatre complex, has taken care to utilise natural resources to meet technical requirements. For example, water of the lotus plaza is used as heat exchanger for air conditioning and the mist generated in the process is to waft across by the natural breeze to cool the plaza. Again, nestling within the earth (half the giant screen is underground) provides for necessary insulation from severe climate and ensures better acoustic control and quake-resistant qualities. Doshi is also upbeat about the features unique to the theatre, the first in any theatre in India. ‘‘This is a landmark project and very interesting for the IMAX team as well. It saves about 25 to 30 per cent energy and gives the feel of natural cooling because it is seven metres under the ground,’’ he said. (ENS) A provision for screening 3D virtual reality projections, video games, cyber cafe and exhibition space are facilities provided besides IMAX theatre. IMAX can house 1,000 persons at any given point besides 300 to 500 people in the premises outside.Tubular steel columns, insulated metal roof, fully automated escalators and a mirror-fitted periscope add to the unique features of the theatre. The theatre will run two regular shows — at 3 pm and 5 pm — for public from October 24. The tickets are priced at Rs 150 for adults and Rs 75 for students. Currently, a 3D movie by David Hall, Into the Deep, based on marine life is being screened at the theatre.Deputy Prime Minster Advani was accompanied by the caretaker Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel among other ministers at the inaugural function.
