Mitt Romney, Republican: Romney is running on the experience of having been a rather popular governor of Massachusetts. And in a Republican fray in which Rudy Giulliani is flaunting administrative skills shown as mayor of New York in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Romney never misses making a reference to his successful stint as CEO of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

• With the other Republican frontrunner, Mike Huckabee, Romney has been drawn into appeals to the conservative faithful. Huckabee, a former preacher, has been throwing none-too-subtle hints about Romney’s Mormon faith. He reached out to the evangelical right this month by recasting the debate with this question: “Who are you more afraid of — Mormons or secularists?”

•In a LAT-Bloomberg poll in June, 35% of their registered voters said they wouldn’t consider voting for a Mormon for president.

•Romney is staunchly pro-life and wants to overturn the Roe vs Wade judgement.

•On climate change, he believes the US shouldn’t act to reduce greenhouse gases unless developing nations are committed to the same.

•On healthcare, Romney encourages states to develop a market-based healthcare programme, and opposes a national version of the plan he supported for Massachusetts as governor which required everyone to get health insurance.

•He voted in favour of invading Iraq and supports troop surge.

•As governor of Massachusetts, Romney opposed a constitutional amendment to codify only traditional marriage, believing it unnecessary. He changed his mind when the Massachusetts Court ruled in favour of legalised same-sex marriage. Romney lobbied for a state constitutional amendment.

•Romney proposes tax relief for middle-income Americans and has advocated eliminating the capital gains tax for those who earn less than $200,000 per year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke on the telephone on Wednesday, both leaders confirmed, marking their third call in a month. While Modi thanked Trump for his Diwali greetings, the US president reiterated his earlier claim that the Indian PM had assured him that India would not buy much oil from Russia and that he, too, wished for the Russia-Ukraine war to end.
