Ekikrut, represented by a group of college students is helping rural students get education

Ritika Athwani, has a hectic schedule this week as her first salsa class as an instructor, begins. But for this second year BCS student of Nowrosjee Wadia College, the exhilaration of she teaching dance is perhaps slighter than the thrill that this class is also going to help someone learn, afar the confines of that group.

Aiming to contribute towards the education of rural youth, a team of college students from across the city has started the charitable organisation Ekikrut. With an intention to contribute towards education through scholarship, it funds rural youth with weaker economic and social conditions, who in turn can prioritise education in their respective villages ahead.

Started recently, the organisation is already funding Neelam, a standard X student in Girim Village in Pune district. 8220;We interviewed and shortlisted several students and eventually chose Neelam. Regardless of her poor background, the 16-year-old is a topper in her class. Thereafter our media wing, Ekikrut films, made a documentary portraying her life to help create an understanding and awareness among the urban youth by screening it for over 300 students,8221; adds Vishal Polikottal a second year BCS student at Symbiosis and one of the founder members of Ekikrut.

Associated to Awake India Foundation, this association takes on several activities and initiatives to gather funds. 8220;Besides screenings, we approach students in our colleges, citizens in malls and other public places for funds. We soon plan to come up with a magazine to create awareness as well as obtain funds through advertising. We have collected around Rs 23,000 till now through diverse contributions,8221; adds Athwani, one of the volunteers. Open for anyone to become a member, the volunteers meet once a fortnight while the core team gets together once a week.

8220;We are keen on students who are eager to continue in their village and preach what they learn. The next candidates selected are Amol Shinde and Prashant Madhukar, both from the village Devalgaon and 10 grade students in Sadguru School. They will receive financial assistance for the next two years,8221; adds Polikottal.

With all of them in the age group 18 to 21 years, this work for them is a step towards a bigger leap of empowering the country educationally. As Sanan Jagwani puts it, 8220;We are the future of the nation and there can be nothing better than contributing to it. I feel immensely passionate about the work and most prominently we all enjoy this.8221;
