Nov 08: What can you possibly say about a band of vagabonds, mostly brothers and friends, who decided to travel around the world sharing the music they’d heard since they were `in the womb’, in a language that few understand? The Gipsy Kings, eight gypsies, have made a mark for themselves by having sold over 10 million albums worldwide.

With a journey that began from a little village south of France, the Gipsy Kings today are a treat for the musically inclined. We repeat – never mind the language barrier, ‘coz they sing in Spanish and Basque. The Very Best of the Gipsy Kings – Volare! is a collection of their best work till date. And that’s all that can be said about it. Little pebbles do not on mountains comment. If you aren’t familiar with the Gipsies, you’re a sad case. If you are, you’d have bought this twin pack by now.

Spin Doctor’s new album, Here comes the Bride dips deeply into hip-hop and Latin groves, but their strength is loose limbed funk. If only they’d realise it themselves. The Doc’s sound has evolved into something more catchy and radio friendly, but then, with two of the original members of the band left to tread greener pastures, something is definitely missing.

The album comprises of songs like Fisherman’s Delight which uses a lot of brass and an upbeat tempo for an upbeat effect, Siren’s Dress, Gorilla Boy (which sounds like a crowd pleaser) and the gem of the album, Bigger I laugh, the harder I cry.

The new guitarist Eran Tabib uses his waw-waw pedal a lot, but unfortunately it is hidden, under the other arrangements. The album ends with Tommorow can pay the rent, a song with a lot of acoustic Latin guitars; the resulting sound is pretty neat.

Here comes the bride is a good album, it grows on to you, like a plain girl, but if you a Spin Doctors fan, you will be disappointed. Here comes the Bride, Spin Doctors, Polygram
