I am 29 and have a skin-related problem on one of my ankles. It has been there for more than a decade. At times, it just vanishes, but then it comes back again after some time. It starts from a small patch, which just grows bigger in size. I have consulted many dermatologists. While some say its eczema, others feel it is psoriasis. I have been using ointment Lobate for last few months. Please tell me what can be done to cure the problem. Is it communicable and what precautions should I take to stop it from spreading to other parts of the body?

Dr Binod Khaitan, associate professor, Department of Dermatology, AIIMS, says:

It seems to be a lichenified (thickening of skin) condition. It may be psoriasis or it may be because of chronic scratching. You are advised to avoid scratching on the affected area completely by using a topical corticosteroid preparation and anti-histamine tablets. If it fails to respond in three to four weeks, you see a dermatologist. You should also continue using the ointment prescribed to you. The problem does not seem communicable and you should not worry about it.
